Whitney Greets Parents for Back to School Night
“I think it’s on the other side.”
“Wait, this isn’t the D building.”
“How am I supposed to walk this far in five minutes?”
These quotes filled campus and weren’t said by students. On Sept. 8 at the 10th annual Back to School Night, parents came to meet their children’s teachers and discuss their education.
“Every year the enthusiasm of the teachers and parents grows, and it’s always fun to hear the teachers brag about their students,” Principal Mrs. Hawkins said.
Parents into classrooms after scrambling across the campus trying to find the correct room, some missing the class because they could not find it.
“I’ve been [to Back to School Night] seven times now and I easily still get lost,” Mrs. Christy Kanik said.
Teachers prepared presentations and speeches to deliver to the parents for the night. Back to School Night is important to teachers because it gives them the opportunity the resolve any questions about the class.
“I love being able to talk to the parents and connect with the parents because [AP World History] comes with a reputation and a lot of questions, so this night gives an opportunity to clear up all the confusion,” Mr. Scott Collins said.
Some of the original staff members have noted changes to the event during the past 10 years.
“When the school had its first Back to School Night there were only freshmen and sophomores here so there were more parents than usual then; now junior and senior parents don’t come as often,” History teacher Mr. Hanks said.
Parents attended to get more of an understanding of their students’ classes.
Mrs. Karen Hassler said, “Coming [to Back to School Night] gives me a behind-the-scenes of my daughter’s classes, and the teachers are good at giving the information quickly.”
