McDonald’s adds new items to their menu

We all know that a number one on the McDonald’s menu is a Big Mac. We all know the addicting, salty fries McDonald’s offers. We all know McDonald’s has had the same menu for decades. But with new options from competitors, McDonald’s has stepped it up by adding a couple of new items to their menus nationwide.

Introducing Shakin’ Flavor Fries and peaches and cream pies. Shakin Flavor Fries are little packets used to “shake-and-season” McDonald’s world-famous French fries. Limited numbers were released to select locations in Stockton, California and Chicago,  Illinois, where food trucks were sent out to give samples to future customers.These food trucks were sent out May 7 and the flavored packets were released to some 14,000 locations in the United States. They come in flavors Garlic Parmesan, Zesty Ranch and Spicy Buffalo.

“I’ve only tried Spicy Buffalo, and it was okay. McDonald’s is known for their fries, though. I don’t think doing this is going to increase their sales. Everyone goes to McDonald’s in search of those mouth-watering fries,” Brandon Mullins said.

Recently, McDonald’s has been offering these flavored packets free with the purchase of a meal.

“I think that just goes to show that the flavored packets are not doing that well in the market. I mean I have not personally tried them myself, but if it were really successful it wouldn’t be offered free; If lots of people were buying they would probably raise the price,” Jazmyne Harris said.

They are also, for a limited time, offering peaches and cream pie. For just 89 cents, you can indulge in this dessert. In the past they have offered apple pies, and strawberry and cream pies. The nutritional value is very low, but a lot of people are purchasing them for just that reason. There are 250 calories, 12 grams of fat and 15 grams of sugar.

“I work at the McDonald’s on Five Star Boulevard and they just started offering the peaches and cream pies, and I love them. They’re really convenient when you just want something to appease your sweet tooth,” Monica Wagner said,

These changes are due to a couple of things. McDonalds’ U.S. same store sales dropped 1.3 percent  this year. Also, both Taco Bell and Burger King have made big changes, Taco Bell has added breakfast to their menu, the most popular being the Waffle Taco. There is a waffle as the “shell” topped with sausage and eggs.

In addition, Burger King added burgers and to their breakfast menu. Consumers have long asked fast food chains to have lunch/dinner all day and Burger King is satisfying their requests.

McDonald’s lovers don’t think that these changes of competitors will have long term effects on the restaurant.

“McDonald’s will always be the top grossing fast food chain in America. I don’t think these other places come clos,.” Hannah Arnold said.
