Turkey. Mashed potatoes. Annoying relatives that are entirely awkward. And, of course, pie. It can only mean one thing: Thanksgiving.
It is a time of family, but the most important fact of the matter is that students have no school. Of course, leave it to teenagers to make a day for generosity and giving about themselves. Yeah, teenagers are selfish. But why does this holiday exist? The time off cannot be fully appreciated without first understanding the history behind the much anticipated family gathering. So here goes…
It’s 1621 in the Americas. Plymouth Colonists and Wampanoag Indians join to eat food and give thanks for their plentiful harvest. Celebration is in the air and a new tradition is born: Thanksgiving…
That is the gist of the holiday anyways. Thanksgiving was, and still is, defined as a time to gather and enjoy the comfort of family and friends. And, obviously, food.
But this sacred day is not a vacation for all. Athletes continue to practice during this week filled with tradition. Why? Holidays are supposed to be celebrated and a break from the rigors of school and life, but the girls’ JV basketball team has two practices during the week. In addition, there is a scrimmage against Woodland. This relaxing time is filled with practice and preparation for the season. Do they care about sacrificing their much needed and awaited week off? Maybe some do, but not these athletes.
“I’m fine with it because I like my team, and we need practice to get ready for the season,” sophomore Lindsey Elmont said.
Practicing during the holidays can also be very beneficial to the players’ health. Those extra calories have to go somewhere.
“I’m excited because I want to say in shape and burn off that turkey dinner,” said JV player Brianna Harber.
Building muscle and strength as a team is a major benefit to practicing. With the extra dedication, the team will become more competitive than ever before.
“We’ll be better than last year, and I know our team will do well this season,” Elmont said.
So there it is. The absolutely undeniable dedication of these athletes. Even holidays are not enough to keep the team apart. Thanksgiving is a time of family, and that is what a team really is: a family..
