When it comes to the genre of comedy in the television industry, shows such as “The Office,” “Modern Family” and “Parks and Recreation” take the cake. However, a relatively new show, “Men At Work,” deserves some recognition. Even though it’s aired on TBS, a network that just doesn’t have as much juice as the more popular NBC and FOX stations, the show is off to a great start starring actors such as Danny Masterson, most famous for his work as Hyde in “That 70’s Show” and the infamous heartthrob Michael Cassidy.
Playing on the idea of a group of journalists and photographers who are friends, the show follows the unpredictable lives of these men. Though the lack of a plotline may be unappealing to some viewers, the comedy is always fresh and makes up for it. The show is not as flawless like “Modern Family,” but the humor reminds me of a more appropriate — and by that I mean a PG-13 version— of “Workaholics.”
A majority of the first season seems to be focused on relationships and sex with a little bit of friendship drama on the side. The different personalities of the characters — Adam Busch as Neal (a nerd), James Lesure as Gibbs (a player), Danny Masterson as MIlo who (the intellectual) and Michael Cassidy as Tyler (the prettyboy)— complement each other pretty well. Though the humor may not be the most comedic, the personalities of the actors brings out the script and makes the show worth watching.
It’s too early for me to tell if this show is worth setting DVR timer. As of right now, I would just tune in when it’s on and you have nothing better to do. As mentioned before, the humor is worthy of praise, it’s just unclear if the writers will run out of ideas soon. In all fairness, they do have two seasons under their belt and the first season of “Men at Work” is much more impressive than the first season for many other comedy shows. I think “Men at Work” shows great promise and will get higher ratings in the future.
