Clashing industrial and metal music together, the first album of “Device” has been a delightful success. Looking the background and creation of the band, “Device” was just a side project that was proposed to David Draiman, lead singer of Disturbed, by Filter’s former guitarist Geno Lenardo. At the time, Disturbed had been on a hiatus, which allowed for Draiman to take his own course. Fans of Disturbed were mixed with emotion, worried that by labeling this new project to have an industrial tone to it would turn it into Dubstep. However, the two musicians eagerly got to work, hoping for a success while David constantly reassures his old fans that Disturbed is not over and that his new project would not sound anything like Skrillex or Dead Mau5.
As a Disturbed fan, there are some high expectations for this new project for Draiman’s former band is deeply missed. If David didn’t appease his fans, his career might have been in danger. But after hearing the entire album released, it is safe to say that Draiman and this project has paid off its hard work.
One of the biggest strengths of the album itself is that it features several guest musicians in the songs, such as Serj Tankian (System of a Down), M. Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Lzzy Hale (Haelstorm), Geezer butler, Glenn Hughes (Black Sabbath), and more. Having many of these popular musicians featured onto the album does not dilute the uniqueness of the project, but it rather gives a stronger impact because “Device” truly does have its own extraordinary sound that would appeal to anyone who loves alternative metal.
The album “Device” features 10 unquestionably amazing songs, with a total running time of 40 minutes and 24 seconds. For someone who missed David Draiman vocals, those 40 minutes filled the emptiness of being without an inspirational singer.
“Vilify” was the first leaked song, however it never gets old, and it is a personal favorite. It starts off with a short few guitar notes then breaks down into a thrash beat. The lyrics are powerful and catchy, but of course Draiman’s vocals are overpowering.
Overall, the rest of the album is gold. Again, the industrial background on top of guitar riffs and powerful metal vocals completely makes the project live up to its name. On a side note, some people have claimed that some songs sound “just like another Disturbed song” and obviously these people have no idea how to distinguish a vocalist from the rest of a band. David Draiman will forever be recognized anywhere for his unique vocal skill, and he will be a guest appearance in Iron Maiden’s upcoming album.
“Device” is available on iTunes and Spotify and also available on Amazon for $10, a pretty sweet deal to listen to such quality music.
