Hundreds of students gathered at the Sacramento Auto Museum under a canopy of softly lit strung lightbulbs to commence junior prom on April 20 at 6:00 p.m.
The 1920s theme of prom blared through the old-fashioned cars on display at the museum, as well as the general atmosphere.
“It was really cool to get to walk around and look at all the cars. The theme of the Roaring ’20s fit perfectly. The lights and decorations were really cute and the mason jars with our name on it was creative,” sophomore Sara Miller said.
Prior to the event, various pre-prom customs took place, such as purchasing the $65 ticket [$60 with ASB discount]. One custom involved asking someone to prom typically in an elaborate fashion.
“Kyen (Balzer) was a contestant at the Mr. WHS Competition and he asked me with a big poster and roses during the interview portion of the contest,” Miller said.
Prom night initiated with a buffet dinner consisting of salad, bread, chicken breast and tortellini pasta. Chocolate cupcakes were also served at an area near the entrance. People were free to roam around the museum, utilizing the free photo booth and checking out the cars on display throughout the night. The dance floor opened up after dinner.
“My favorite part about prom was dancing with all my friends. We went crazy and had so much fun! The DJ played a lot of great dance music,” junior Sophie Butler said.
After a period of anyone being able to dance on the floor, the DJ transitioned to slower-paced music in dedication to the couples of the night. When that was over, the floor was once again open for everyone to dance for the rest of the night. Students were welcome to take home their custom mason jars, a wide mouthed glass jar with black plaques in which students’ names were written, as they were the official party favors.
Nick Manlowe, a junior, had already experienced prom in his freshman and sophomore years.
“I’ve already been to prom so I wasn’t feeling too excited about it before, but this year was definitely better than the others because it was with my own class,” Manlowe said.
Miller, on the other hand, had not yet experienced prom as a junior but attended this year as a sophomore.
Miller said, “I’m really glad I got to experience prom before my junior year because I know what to do and what not to do with planning everything out. It was definitely one of the best school dances I’ve ever been to and I can’t wait to go again with all my friends next year.”
