The girls powder puff game Monday night at 6:30 p.m., kicked off homecoming week, with the evening ending with victorious wins for both the seniors, who won 42:6, and freshmen, who won 22:14.The evening started with the freshman and sophomore game, and ended with the junior and senior game at 9:00 p.m.
Powder puff, an annual homecoming tradition, is played with females with males on the side cheering for their team. The game is played between juniors vs. the seniors and freshmen vs. the sophomores. The maximum number of players allowed per team here was 60 girls and 20 boys. In order to sign up students had to pay a $20 and turn in a permission slip to the student store by Sept. 14.
Seven coaches led the classes to the field, with the freshmen being coached by Mr. Jason Feuerbach and Ms. Danielle (Dee) Thomas, sophomores by Ms. Suzie Main and Mr. Jason Knowles, juniors by Ms. Laura Brun and Mr. Jon Bryant, and the seniors by Mr. Erich Means. Mr. Kym Milisci and Mr. Jesus Armas refereed the freshman and sophomore game and Mr. Tim Farnan refereed the junior and senior game.
The freshman vs sophomore game started first with the sophomores, who started with the ball. The freshmen scored the first touchdown but the sophomore spirit didn’t die out when the sophomore boys chanted “sophomore power.” Sophomores rushed for a first down but failed with the freshmen blocking the pass. Sophomores made their first touchdown which then made the score 6:6. The freshmen then scored a touchdown in the second quarter with an additional two points which made the score 14:6. The first half ended with a score of 14:6. After the first half the halftime show started with performances by the freshmen cheerleaders followed by the sophomores shortly after.
The second half started with the sophomores who scored the first touchdown at with two additional points that followed the touchdown. At the crowd boos the sophomores due to a sophomore who held onto a freshman player during the game. The freshmen then made a touchdown with only 42.8 seconds left on the clock with two additional points that followed the touchdown, which made the final score 22 for the freshmen and 14 for the sophomores. The freshmen celebrated their victory by singing the fight song with the audience.
“We worked well together and had good communication, everyone was really pumped up and it was really exciting” freshman powder puff player Nichole Tyler said.
“I feel good (about winning the game) because it proves that freshmen aren’t weak,” freshman powder puff player Dorian Kester said.
The junior vs senior game started shortly after the freshman vs sophomore game at 7:40 p.m with the seniors starting with the ball. The seniors scored the first touchdown within 17 minutes during the first quarter with an additional two points that followed their first touchdown. The seniors then made another touchdown with two points added to their score. After every touchdown senior Nathan Torno as well as the other senior cheerleaders did the number of push ups that was on the scoreboard for the seniors. The first half ended with the seniors leading the score with 28:0. The junior and senior cheerleaders then took the field during the halftime show.
“I think the seniors’ performance brought justice to our title at the school,” senior Maria Balbin said.
The juniors started with the ball in the second half. The seniors made a touchdown followed by two points added to their score making the score 34:0. The juniors then made their first and final touchdown which made the score 36:6. But the seniors made the final touchdown with only 37 seconds left on the clock making the final score 42-6. The stadium was filled with the seniors chanting “You wish you were a senior” and celebrating their last powder puff victory here.
“We won our last powder puff game making our wins during high school career two wins, ‘13ow down, enough said,” Balbin said.
