The Weeknd’s latest album my dear melancholy is most definitely a break-up album and it has got to be Abel’s most depressing album yet. It is pervaded with feelings of reminiscence as the singer expresses his emotions after a traumatic break-up with his ex Selena Gomez.

This short EP features only six songs and was released March 30, the most popular songs on his EP include “Call out my name,” “Wasted times” and “Privilege.”

With “Call out my name” being the highest ranked on the album so far, Abel exposes his agonizing heartbreak through the use of lyrics: “I helped you out of a broken place… you gave me comfort but falling for you was my mistake// I almost cut a piece of myself for your life.” He discusses how he did everything possible to try and save Selena when she was suffering from a disease called Lupus and ultimately proving his love for her. By revealing how he almost cut a piece of himself to save her life, Abel is talking about how he would donate his own kidney to her. However the singer contradicts himself by saying how it was a mistake falling for her, the reason being is because she was still in love with her ex, Justin Bieber and a few days after ending her relationship with Abel she went running back to him.

The singer probably chose to name the album with this specific title because he’s addressing his sadness directly; this can also be seen in his song “Privilege” when he says “I got two red pills to take the blues away,” with ‘blues’ referring to sadness, the singer turns to his old ways of drugs and alcohol as a way to numb his pain from all the heartbreak, adding to his self-pitying state and how he begins to lose his sense of self because of the endless pain he feels.

Personally I think that the entire album is profoundly heartfelt; the singer has managed to channel his grief into music which I find incredible. Out of all the songs on the album, it would be hard to choose a favorite because all of them are wonderful, they are composed with lyrics that are sincere and accompanied with somber melodies. This album reveals Abel in his most vulnerable state whilst he reminisces on his past relationship and the struggle he encounters to get over it. To be honest I feel sympathetic towards him if anything, even though he indulges in self-pity, deep down you can obviously tell how intense his pain really is.
