Podcast becomes a new show
Amazon celebrates the spooky month of October by releasing a new show based on a podcast.
“Lore”, a psychological thriller about humans by humans and the supernatural, was released Oct. 13. Previously dependent on the listener’s imagination for the story to come to life, the two-year old podcast enters home screens across the nation via Amazon Prime.
A huge achievement from transferring the podcast to the television was keeping the story alive. Although some would complain the show is a history lesson, a main reason why the podcast was a hit was that the characters were so eerily true and human. A concern when the show was released was the humanity of the characters would be lost, but the producers did not disappoint. They kept the humanity of the story continuous, especially in Episode 2 where the main character, Dr. Walter Freeman, can be seen going through a journey of self-questioning over his personal morals.
Another creative attribute was the use of Aaron Mahnke’s voice to narrate the story. By using his voice in the show, it allows for a feeling of familiarity between the show and the podcast. From this familiarity, viewers used to his voice now can enjoy the true meaning of his words.
How the producers devised the production of the various stories was a fantastic creation to see. Using animation, filters, and honesty to describe how it was between the early modern period and common era allows for new creative expression. Using animation grants the ability to demonstrate actions that most likely could not be done in a studio and increases the viewer experience. Honesty by not skimping on the true facts of life makes the show more commendable because it adds to the feeling of reality to the story, and that is something the podcast and show are strongly praised on. A truly amazing concept they put into the story was how it still relates to present day. As discussed in Episode 4 our fears dictate how society is shaped, revealing how much we have not left the past.
Transitioning a podcast to a television show is monumental for the future of TV, causing us to ask the question of what next?
